What are the most common causes of motorcycle accidents?

It is almost summertime in Illinois, which means it might be time for you to bust out that motorcycle and hit the open road. As enjoyable as it can be to cruise around your city streets and feel the wind on your face, remember that you have very little protection as a motorcycle rider. If you are to collide with a car or truck, you will likely find yourself on the losing end.

While there is only so much you can do to stay safe, given that you cannot control the actions of other motorists, there are, per RideApart.com, certain steps that can reduce your chance of suffering injury on your bike. For example, the single-most common cause of motorcycle accidentsis another driver turning left in front of you. While you cannot predict the future, you can become increasingly vigilant while on your bike, and it also helps to try and anticipate the actions of the cars in front of you.

Another common cause of motorcycle accidents is someone switching lanes ahead of you. Frequently, this occurs because, as a motorcyclist, you are even more susceptible to landing in a motorist’s blind spot than you would be if you were driving a passenger car. As a general rule, try and see a driver’s eyes in his or her rearview mirror. If you are unable to do so, assume that the driver cannot see you, either.

You also run the risk of an accident or injury if a car strikes you from behind, particularly if you are stationary at, say, a traffic light. In such an instance, it may be wise to pull ahead of a driver at the light if you can do so safely, so that the driver’s car provides some protection between you and other fast-approaching vehicles.

This information about common motorcycle accident causes is informative in nature, but it should not replace legal advice.
