Are cars or motorcycles to blame for accidents?

There is no question that driving a motorcycle can be dangerous. Not only is there essentially no protective barrier between you and the road, motorcycles lack certain safety devices that cars are equipped with, such as seat belts and air bags. It is not a surprise that people who are involved in motorcycle accidents often get seriously injured or killed as a result of the impact. Yet, who is at fault for the majority of car accidents?

According to a study conducted by the University of South Florida’s Center for Urban Transportation Research, motor vehicles are responsible for causing motorcycle accidents approximately 60 percent of the time. Accidents also occur when vehicles pull out in front of a motorcycle, like when making a left-hand turn and the motorcycle is going straight. It is easy for motorists to have difficulties judging the speed and distance of an approaching motorcycle, primarily because of a motorcycle’s smaller profile.

Furthermore, motorists who are distracted with cellular devices, GPS units and other gadgets are not focused on the road, and are more likely to cause a motorcycle accident. It is crucial that all motorists and motorcyclists alike keep their full and undistracted attention on the road at all times. Distractions reduce motorists’ response time to certain hazards, including motorcyclists, pedestrians and objects in the road.
