Social media’s role in deadly car accidents

Although it is illegal for drivers to talk or text on a hand-held device while behind the wheel, many people continue to do so. Not only does this put their lives and the lives of their passengers at risk, but it endangers everyone on the road. In addition to talking and texting, a number of drivers read their social media notifications, post status updates and attempt to take selfies all while navigating the roadways. In several cases, this has led to tragic deaths. These fatalities have been documented on Snapchat, Facebook and Twitter as a sad reminder of what can happen when drivers use their cellphones.

In one case, a Georgia woman was using Snapchat’s speed filter to chart how fast she was going in her vehicle while driving. The snapshot targeted her at 107 mph when she hit another driver. Although the woman did not suffer any permanent injuries, the victim in the other vehicle received permanent brain damage because of the driver’s carelessness. He has now filed a lawsuit against the reckless woman.

While texting and talking on a hand-held device acts as a significant manual, visual and cognitive distraction, posting selfies and status updates takes the danger to a whole new level. Not only does the driver have to get to the picture-taking feature on their phone, but they have to position themselves correctly, look at the phone and snap a picture. During this entire period of time, the driver is not paying attention to the road and is totally unprepared for any potential hazards that may come their way.
