A man is in the hospital suffering from major injuries — possibly a severed leg — after a horrific hit-and-run accident in Illinois in late January. The 46-year-old was crossing a street when a black Camaro, traveling at a high rate of speed, barrelled through him and just kept going. Despite having no help from the driver, the injured man was fitted with a tourniquet and rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment. Reports say he's in stable condition.
Police conducted an investigation of the scene for around six hours to reconstruct what happened. It was all caught on a red light camera, and the Camaro left behind a few parts. Authorities are visiting auto body shops to see if any cars came in with a certain type of damage.
When the driver is found, there will almost certainly be charges filed, but the victim may also be able to file a suit against the driver. After all, he's probably stuck with medical bills and may not be able to return to work. Depending on the severity of the injury, he could also be looking at extensive rehabilitation.
In cases like these, the victim should never be burdened with debt because of the negligence of another. A personal injury attorney with experience in pedestrian accidents may be able to reconstruct a crash, determine fault and build a case for compensation. That's why if you've been injured in an accident like this one, it might be in your best interests to speak with an attorney.
