Illinois woman dead after chain reaction accident

It started with a small fender bender and ended with one woman dead and another in the hospital. A 37-year-old woman was driving southbound in her 2012 Ford on I-94 when she attempted to change lanes. There wasn't enough room, and the back of her vehicle struck the front driver's side of a 2010 Chevrolet.

The woman's Ford started spinning, slamming into the median and coming to rest facing oncoming traffic. That's when a 2004 Oldsmobile came along and collided with the stopped Ford. The Oldsmobile spun out as well, and as it did, a red tractor trailer hit it, sending the 18-wheeler into the driver of the Ford, who had gotten out of her vehicle. She was pronounced dead, and the woman in the Oldsmobile was taken to a nearby hospital.

The driver of the big rig stopped briefly and then took off, which authorities say classifies as a hit-and-run accident. Officials from the Illinois State Police haven't indicated whether drugs or alcohol were a factor in the crash.

It was a bizarre and tragic chain of events, but it underlines a couple of points. First, if you leave your vehicle after a collision, get a safe distance away and call the police or emergency medical personnel. Second, you should never leave the scene of an accident, no matter how minor it may seem. Always exchange information and make sure everyone involved is okay.

Once you've done that, your next step may be to call a personal injury attorney, who might be able to get you compensation for your injuries.
