Illinois motorcyclists: stay safe as you hit the roads again

| Mar 16, 2017 | motorcycle accidents

The weather has been unseasonably warm here in Illinois, and that makes it awfully tempting to get on your motorcycle and go for a ride to enjoy it. But before you don your chaps and strap on the helmet, there are a few things you can do to ensure safe riding.

Here are a couple of them to get you started:

Get your bike checked out. Your motorcycle has probably been gathering dust over these chilly winter months, so it’s worth taking it in for an inspection. Or, if you’re a confident tinkerer, make sure you check tire pressure, look out for oil leaks and do a thorough checkup.

Watch out for other drivers. Our four-wheeled friends have been driving Illinois’ beautiful roads sans motorcycles for a few months now, so they may not be in the right mindset to watch for motorcycles. Keep that in mind and be extra vigilant as you ride.

Keep an eye on road conditions. The cold weather means salt and sand, plus a fair share of potholes and cracks as the road has expanded and contracted. Watch for any new road condition developments that could land you in deep trouble.

Even with precautions, accidents can and will still happen. In fact, the National Highway Traffic Administration warns us that motorcycle riders are 27 times more likely to die in a crash than occupants of passenger cars.

If you are injured in a motorcycle accident in Illinois, the last thing you need is extra medical bills and lost wages. An attorney may be able to help you get compensation to pay for any expenses your injury has brought about.
